  • Peach Leaf Curl Protection

I have a container grown Apricot and Nectarine outside but covered by a plastic sheet to help prevent Peach Leaf Curl. As this is the first time I have covered them can someone please advise me when it will be safe to remove the plastic sheet?

    Best regards,
    Greg

If you've roofed them over, but left the sides open you can more or less do whatever is convenient. If however you've sort of semi-wrapped them up in plastic, you'll have to compromise depending on the weather. Ideally from the curl POV you'd be best protecting them until the leaves are reaching almost full size, but on sunny days the trees will cook if given too much cover and not enough air.

nickdub. Thank you for the advice. I have the two trees up against a wooden structure with the plastic draped over the trees and fixed to the structure above the trees. The plastic is open at both ends to get air circulation.

      Best regards,

Sounds OK - as long as there is plenty of air movement and the space doesn't over heat, the world's your lobster.

The other consideration is pollination when the flowers come out, but if they are young trees you may not get any this year.

I think peach leaf curl is caused by rain getting on the foliage. If the cover causes sweating and condensation on the underside it may be counter productive. If it is away from the foliage and open ended it should be ok.

You can hand pollinate the flowers with a rabbits scut or a small paintbrush.

In my area frost is the main enemy as peaches flower early in the year.
