  • Patio Grown Fruit Trees

I believe it was 3 years ago I bought 3 fruit trees, one of those gardening offers from a newspaper (T&M supplier) - unknown specific varieties - with the intention of growing on in containers.

The year I got them it was a long hot and dry summer - so together with the disturbance of them being moved and shipped to me, planted up etc nothing happened in the first year - other than settling in. I did line the containers with newspaper and added some gel bits to the soil mixture.

Last year I got 6-7 fruits from the 'red' apple. They were not particularly good eating - but it was encouraging and a start.

This year the yellow (possibly green?) apple produced what I reported on another thread plenty of blossom - at the time I thought only 20-30 blooms - but on closer inspection that figure is at least double. These have now almost completely dropped and look like fruit is beginning to set!

The pear is also covered in flower buds and will bloom for the first time quite shortly - so its just the red one to do it biz and the set will be complete this year.

I'm really pleased as my fingers are not the greenest.

The lesson I've learned here is that is DOES pay to be patient and that even with minimal TLC plants do reward their owners - even perhaps when they don't deserve it entirely. I will be looking to feed the trees this year so can anyone advise on best stragegy as to what and how often?

    Thanks.

I'm pretty bad at feeding my pot trees but I do give them a top dressing of farmyard manure each Spring then a Miracle Grow drenching as and when I feed all my other pots. I don't know if this is the correct experty way but I've had my Apples for 10yrs+ and I great fruit each year.

    Hope that helps!

I don't have access to farmyard muck - would a sprinkling of chicken manure pellets do the same job?

I buy it from B&Q or any Garden Centers.....about £4ish, called Farmyard Manure. I don't see why you couldn't use Chick pellets though.

No, do it early Spring as the tree wakes up from winter. Failing that as soon as you get some! As I said I'm no expert but it's worked for me this way!

Ok - I'll wait a day or 2 to see if there is any more 'learned' advice and add a trowels' worth if I don't hear to the contrary.
