I planted some autumn raspberry canes before Christmas, three varieties Autumn Bliss, Polka and All Gold. Unfortunately the labels had come off them in the packaging, so I couldn't tell which were which. I followed the planting instructions and cut the canes down to about 5cm after planting. Now about half of the canes are showing new growth and the others absolutely no signs of life. Should I be worried, or are different varieties quite variable in their rate of growth?

I wouldn't worry just yet...plenty of time yet to see new growth. Ive 3 varieties and they are all at different stages. -
My Autumn Bliss have been slower to start sprouting new canes than the All Gold but the All Gold are in a better spot in better soil so its hard for me to say. I would say that I didn't see signs of life from my canes for a long time after they were planted so I wouldn't give up on them yet.Comment

Thanks everyone, that's reassuring. I haven't grown raspberries before so I'm not sure what to expect, and all the other soft fruit I have is leafing out vigorously.Comment

until they feel the warmth of the sun on the soil they will be busy putting out a good root system to support the plants growth, and it has been a prolonged, cold, spring, I would not worry until the end of may the way the weather has been this year..Comment

My new plantings (to replace older ones) are sitting sulking till the sun comes..
No use telling them off.
Polka are very tasty and very prolific..I have to hack back all the unwanted plants in June as they threaten a garden invasion every year..Last edited by Madasafish; 18-04-2016, 03:00 PM.Comment

My Polka are about 3 inches tall at the moment so maybe the ones that are showing are those.
If you've put them near each other you won't be able to tell in a couple of years anyway. I put my 10 raspberries in a 20ft by 6ft bed a couple of years ago. They are showing all over the bed this year, in a while I plan to hoe some of them down so that I can walk up the middle to pick later in the season.Comment

I reckon I've spent 6 or seven hours digging the roots out of 6*4 bed. Originally 6 autumn Joan j's. Only been in 2 and a half years. Still pulling roots out now.
Don't plant em in the wrong place is what I'm saying

My autumn raspberries, planted this year, aren't showing any signs of life yet either....but I'm not worried yet.
They have plenty of time to catch up!Comment

Were they barerooted or in pots?
If the former, they're probably getting their roots sorted before they think about shoots.
I have some I planted earlier this year that are doing nothing. No panic here
