  • New raspberry canes sprouting now?

    Hi everyone,

Pottering around the garden yesterday i noticed to my supprise 2 new raspberry canes sprouting out of the ground in my raspberry bed! I thought new canes only started growing in the spring? Is it normal for them to pop out of the ground at this time of year??

Yes it is normal, either wrench them out or tie them in and they will be the canes that fruit next year.

Perfectly normal, these will bear fruit next year. The recent rain has probably helped.

I have just been down and tied all mine in for next year. It was easy to see the ones that fruited this year and I cut them down to the ground . I have new ones that are already 5ft high. I will give them a good feed over the winter with some manure and hopefully next year will have loads of raspberries.

It has two chances , up or down.

After three years I have finally got a decent number of new canes and the autumn fruiting canes are nearly 5ft high so hoping for a good supply of fruit. I still cant get used to yellow raspberries.

Thanks for the info guys. They are only 1 or 2 inches high at the moment so not quite big enough to tie in. The reason i found it strange is that i had new canes come up in the spring and they are about 4ft tall now and tied in... then months later some new activity

I will just leave them and see how they do.
