We had our second crumble on Sunday. Must have had a good dozen sticks already. Not usually this early for me but it got a good dose of chookems poo compost this year and I swear it's made the difference.

              I had a pie:

              on St Patrick's Day.

              This is it today:

That's the Timperley Early though, the Stockbridge Arrow is still only about 6" tall.

We have been enjoying rhubarb from the lottie for several weeks now. No idea what variety it is I inherited it when I took over the plot. It's always very early, weeks infront of everyone elses which means I end up giving most of it away to fellow plot holders until theirs catches up.

Today we are having it stewed and left to go cold served with organic natural yoghurt and honey. Yum yum.
It is the doom of man, that they forget.

Is Stockbridge Arrow the one that yields quite a lot? I've got Timperley Early, Victoria, Glaskins Perpetual and Red something or other - I rather fancy SA. We like rhubarb and with Mr VVG being a Yorkshire man, I have to keep up with the traditions, tuskie and all that.

Sorry VVG, couldn't tell ya. Only bought it last year so couldn't pick from it. I did buy it from Yorkshire though, as anything else would not be proper. Brandy Carr Nurseries. I bought a 2-year old liquorice plant too, which I have just potted up into a large Longtom from Yorkshire Flowerpots to make sure it feels at home.

this is about the earliest i get any rhubarb .... i guess i get "just enough" .... would love to have some earlier .... but i also have the plums, apples, pears, tons of berries etc .... never a shortage of fruit for pies and crumbles .... and the rhubarb is the one we look forward to most!

I got two rhubarb crowns from the market a few weeks ago. One of them is peeping through now. Got another one off a guy near my allotment that is growing very nicely indeed! I have missed rhubarb so much, and I'm too tight to buy it in the supermarkets.

There's someone at work selling them for 50p per stick!! Again.. too tight!!

Have you ever tried forcing your rhubarb, Farmer? When mine starts to grow, I put a bin over the top of it. It grows faster, and is supposed to be more tender. It does deplete the plant's reserves a bit so you're not meant to do it every year. I do though, but I'm not too hard on the plant for the rest of the year, so it has plenty of time to replenish energy. It might depend what variety you have as to whether it would work for you.

My Rhubarbs about the same size as Taffs so it will be a while before I'm picking it. Don't know what variety it is wonder if its worth my while to buy a named plant as well.

no .... partly because i have only one good rhubarb crown (which could be split into 5 or 6) and depleting it by forcing doesn't appeal, and partly because i never think about forcing until it's too late!

when i have a lot more rhubarb growing, i'll definitely be forcing ....
