    Kiwi - Pruning After Planting

    I am now the proud owner of a Kiwi - Jenny plant and once again I am completely confused as to pruning it once I have planted it. I am going to gow it up a trellis topped fence and along two wires which are supported by vine eyes which are attached to the trellis part of the fence. Some information I have read says that once planted the plant should be cut back to a single stem around 30cm tall allowing two nodes between the cut and the graft and traing the stronger of the rods when they break up a cane to get a single trunk. Other information I have read say just support the rods that are already growing using canes until they reach the wires.

    Can anyone tell me how they trained their Kiwi when they first planted it?

    I am told the best way is to treat it just like a grape vine....me I just left it to do its own thing and climb everywhere....but they get big unpruned....

    Some good info on kiwis on this link to a bulgarian forum if you use google chrome it will translate it.

      I left mine (it wasn't that big) and pruned it hard back in feb to a reasonably thick bit of the stem.

      Pruned back hard again last year to get a good trunk.

      This year will prune back hard to make the arms.

      Been cutting back the side shoots to one or two leaves to focus on the main tips.

        I planted mine against a trellis, the side of an arch. I was so happy to see it twining its little tendrils up and through the trellis that I never thought about pruning/training it.
        Up it went, up and up, winding itself ever tighter around the trellis. Can't be long now, thought I, I'll soon be picking kiwis.
        Jenny was such a strong girl, she flexed her muscles and dragged the bars of the trellis away from their uprights She grew taller and stronger year by year and the only pruning I did was to cut off the branches that whipped across my face, or tapped on the bedroom window after dark.
        I could go on an on, just like Jenny, but I'll spare you. The moral of this sad tale is be strict with Jenny, she needs to be put in her place from the beginning. She's very wilful
