Anthony I have only ever stored them that way once and they lasted for a good few months.

It also depends on where you store them.
I have a box of wrinkly eating apples which I only wrapped up 4 weeks ago....left them in too warm a place (Still- they taste great !)

I read somewhere that in optimum conditions cooking apples should keep until March, eaters I think until Christmas. they need to be somewhere cool, dark and dry, like a dry shed or a cellar. Personally I'm planning on freezing some and storing the rest in the shed.

A lot depends on the variety as well. Some are best eaten straight off the tree, others are better stored. Of the stored ones they have different "life" as well some maturing earlier than others - sorry to confuse.

All depends on storage, are they stored in a cool, dry place with plenty of ventilation around the apple trays? Did you remove any blemished apples or damaged apples? Certain varieties need eating quickly and are not storers, these you can 'pickle' in syrup or indeed. just dry as apple rings (very easy, just a piece of bamboo, you core the apple, chop it into rings and thread them on, then place over the vents of a low oven (suspended above the vents not on them!). Bramleys, cox and most of the heritage varieties will store well but if they get too warm, they will rot. They should last you until New Year or as they use to say, a well stored apple will see you out to the first apple blossom.
                  Best wishes
