  • Hinnonmaki Gooseberry

OK I am not fond of goosegogs owing to eating raw, tart, green ones from my granny's garden. But, I have seen these in Aldi and a grape reckons it's a nice one. So, what recipes can inspire me to want to buy and plant these?
    Thanks in advance.

Gooseberries - cook them down and strain through muslin.

Add same volume of jam sugar to liquid and cook on rolling boil til at jam setting stage. [or use non jam sugar and add come certo once stage reached]

        Pop into jar.

Then have the scrapings from the pan on some crackers or cheese [if low carbing].

        OOh - the lovely delight.

OK on your say so be it. I will go and buy some. See if I can't turn my hatred for gooseberries back around. No cardamom or anything like that? Just goosegogs and jam sugar?

That's how my auntie taught me [although in her day it was certo and normal sugar].

Before I was veggie, her gooseberry jelly got me through many a meaty meal - bleurgh. I would use ti to take the taste away.

I believe the red ones are sweeter than the green so you can eat them fresh as well as cooking them. I have Wynhams industry, tiny crop last year but they were lovely when I managed to pick them at the right time

Are they red? Neighbour has a green one - unknown variety - each year it is loaded and they always offer the fruit to us. I always say thank you but then pass it on as I don't like them. Although to be fair, I have never thought of turning them into jellies and I know I didn't really fancy skins in jam.
