  • Has anyone ever seen this?

This afternoon, I ate an apple, and when I cut and cored it, I found several seeds already germinated. the roots were about a centimetre long. I have planted the seeds in a pot on the kitchen window sill. The apple was a Pink Lady and not over-ripe for eating. it was still crisp and tasted perfect.

    Ooooh! That's weird.

You should have taken a photo for us before you ate it, though!

I do have the seeds and if they grow, I can photograph my trees. I don't have enough resolution on my digi for very small things

Do they glow if you turn the lights off?

Give it a dozen years or so and you could have some nice 30 foot tall crab apple trees in your garden/allotment courtesy of your free seeds!

My dad once had this happen. He planted the seedling and got a decent apple tree. However, before it fruited he had to cut it down because he wanted to build a garage. Couldn't see that it was like murdering your kids! The only problem is you won't get the variety you planted. On the up-side (I like up-sides!) you could call it Hanadr's Pippin or some such. To be serious, if you wanted to, you could get a dwarfing rootstock from a tree nursery and graft it on so the thing wouldn't take over your garden like a triffid.

Another advantage of grafting your little seedling in a year or so would be that you should get fruit much sooner!

As said before you probably won't get a pink lady tree as the friut was probably open polinated and what you get may not be worth growing as it may not produce a worthwhile or even edible crop - but fun to try!

I have heard of tomatoes germinating in this way before but not apples. Is it becomming more common? And is this a reflection on how the crops are raised?

Unforttunately i don't have space for another apple tree. I have an Ellison's Orange in my small town garden and everything else has to make do with pots

I thought friut was supposed to contain an inhibitor to stop this happening so maybe it's one of those deficincies in the tree that allows it to happen, a bit like a very short person having a growth hormone deficiency.
