  • The Happy Berry

I’m wondering if early adopters of the Himalayan Goji Berry, “the happy berry” (subject of hilarious earlier thread) have now experienced T&M’s promised “induction of a sense of well being” and are they now confident of living for ever? Is this the happy gardener’s answer to blight and undersized aubergines?

Also, as it’s evidently very attractive to slugs (how do slugs know it’s safe to eat if it’s only just been introduced, is there a Slug Internet?) will it lead to healthier everlasting slugs? (I think I’ve already got some of those….)

Am thinking of getting some Goji plants (T&M 2008) so any growing tips (and spaced out stories) appreciated before the Government taxes or bans it.

I grew 20 seeds earlier this year.£2.50 ebay. Now have 16 plants:all germinated but the slug tomtom meant 4 were stripped bare by slugs and snails.

No berries this year ... will overwinter in greenhouse. All in pots mostly raised off ground: compost and cow manure...slug pellets...
    Tallest is 0.7metres, smallest 0.2metres.

what do they taste like, could do with eating some of those before i go down the allotment again to see my weed collection.
( I mean the berrys not the slugs).

Perhaps you need to ask the slugs as they seem to be eating them.

As an aside I haven't tracked down the previous thread on Gojis yet - does it give us encouragement to grow them. I've got a good dozen at the 2 leaf stage.

I have them dried (bought from Julian Graves health food shop, I did ask if they were horrible first!) and they taste quite 'figgy'. They are very chewy though! We have literally just been allocated our first allotment and were thinking about growing some of these because I quite like them!
My chap did some research and said that they are reasonably easy to grow..... I guess we will soon find out

I believe there is another plant that has a similar effect! Now,what was it called?? Began with M,or maybe H?
                  I think(not sure)that it was banned(can't think why!!)
I see Gogi berries are sold in my local health food shop,so will try them out for their health benefits.

I know, I remember the first time you were seen. That poor triceratop's will never forget watching you trying to fly. On a different note, my gojis haven't been touched by the slugs, they've been too busy with my hostas. Have to say they are a pretty colour leaf tho, aah!

Hello one and all, this is my first post, prompted by wanting to tell someone .. anyone .. about my goji seedlings.

I've got 3 goji seedlings on my office windowsill - it's quite sunny and I believe you have to keep them warm for a year, then they're hardier. I grew mine from seeds from goji berries I'd been eating. Had to have something exciting happening at work.... I have read that you don't know what variety you've got if you do this, but who cares if we don't know each other's names. Germination is certainly very easy and quick and they're happy to grow in some improvised scrap paper and paperclip pots. Totally cost-free!! Well, apart from the compost.

Well done Dan - and welcome to the grapevine. Looking at the cost of these things you'ver saved yourself a small fortune.
