  • Grape vine cutting

    Hi,

Could anyone recommend a source for a couple of low cost grape vine cuttings? It's something I'd like to try but I don't really want to spend the £15 odd that eBay sellers seem to want as a minimum.

    many thanks

Remind us again in Autumn before they're pruned and people would probably send you some. I would but too late now as I pruned mine before xmas, in the first cold spell.

specialist vine nursery is the place for national collection if you want to play 'if I had lots of money and space'

If you are not fussed about variety like TS says remind us later in the year. I have a unknown - red seeded (possibly Hamburg), perlette, phoenix and pink Suffolk. (but depends how they get on during the year as 3 of them are quite young)

That's very generous - I'm happy to wait. Naturally I'll cover all costs.

A variety that doesn't mind being quite "north" would be best - but happy to try anything.

Are you planning on growing the vine under-cover ie conservatory or greenhouse ? If not, then you probably need a variety which will cope with the cooler conditions you have.

I'm thinking I can site it in a corner of the poly tunnel and train it along a crop bar.

I haven’t pruned mine up the top....couldn’t be bothered getting my ladders.....you are welcome to a few sticks.

Mine is grown on an outside south/west facing wall. I planted it about 18years ago and i didn’t record the variety.
It’s a black grape. Has seeds. A little tart but reasonably good eaten fresh. I made pink fizz with it once which was delicious but was knock out fuel I’m not into wine making so I only had one try. I make jelly and jams with it usually and eat a few fresh. There’s usually pounds of fruit on it left for the birds. Its not pruned that well.

Although mine is outside I’m in the southwest so very mild down here....

Most ?all grapes sold in the UK are grafted onto a different rootstock.
Ald1/L1dl usually sell vines some time during the year - not too expensive.

That is a good point - I'll check with my local Lidl over the next couple of weeks (we don't have Aldi here)

                    Thanks

Sounds reasonable - I've done something similar. I planted the roots outside so I wouldn't need to water and trained the vine under the wall. Be aware that depending on how it goes and the size of your poly-tunnel the vine could end up taking over quite a bit of it. I've grown black hamburg vines from cuttings, they rooted really easily, though I'd let it have 18 months in the ground before moving it.

My tunnel is quite large so I think I'm ok there. I was going to plant the vine actually in the ground in it - close to the edge where it can access outside water.

I've done the same thing in my greenhouse. Planted it in the corner and the roots run through to the outside, underneath the metal base

You do have to keep it in check though!

But works well, and actually offers a little shade come high summer.

Well that's if we do get an high summer!
