  • Fruit plants coming to Aldi next week ...

And I assume to a store near you too soon ...
ALDI - Thursday Special Buys 2nd August 2012

The Kiwi looked tempting until I read some of the posts on here Sounds like a madman once it eastablishes so will give it a miss.

Has anyone ever bought the grape vines or blackberries from Aldi? Any idea what varieties they are or how they do?

What do you think of tayberries and loganberries?

    Thanks a lot

    Here's the non-Euro version!! ALDI - Thursday Special Buys 2nd August 2012
I'm about to cut my Kiwi down - its a thug - so give that a miss unless you have plenty of space or are a disciplined pruner.
LeedsLad was on here a few days ago eating blackberries from a plant from Aldi or Morrisons - they were very early and I may be tempted to buy one of those.
My loganberries are viciously thorny but I would buy a thornless one if they have them.

personally i won't buy "cheap" again .... i can't remember buying plants from aldi, but definitely bought them from wilkos .... anything "cheap" is going to be small .... wilkos olives were little more than a twig .... chances of survival are reduced, and those that do survive take much longer to get going and produce anything .... much better to go to a garden centre and pay a little bit more for a more established plant

I've seen pretty poor plants at garden centres so don't give them all the credit for good plants.
Aldi plants , morrisons, lidl and £shop have always been ok - and when you consider the price difference.

Just make sure the plant you buy looks ok though before you part with cash - and that goes for all places!

my missus bought wilko's kiwi - it was tiny, grew a bit, and now the new growth has died off

the missus bought wilko's grape vines, 2 green, one red .... 2 of them died on a cold night .... the one that's left is a stick with a single shoot about 12in long .... it's still in the greenhouse .... it MIGHT be ok outside next year .... i think some varieties of grape are hardier than others .... better to shop around for a variety that's hardy enough to survive your local climate .... garden centres are your best option for that ....

i love loganberries, mine puts out loads of really long canes and i need a much better support structure .... you only need a single cane to do this, so this might ok from a cheap shop ....

if you're going for raspberries etc, garden centres will normally sell a bundle of 5 canes for a few quid more than a single cane from a cheapy shop .... separate the canes and plant out .... job done ....

These are the plants! I remember the packaging and the labels match =)
So it seems this are the crazy growing, thornless early blackberries I have in my garden!

Most of my Aldi fruit is bombing away but everything bought from wilkos has been rubbish.

Wow - that really takes the .......

I bought a grape vine from Aldi a couple of weeks ago for £5 and there they are now selling them for £2.

They never name their varieties but I suspect the "green" (white) grape is 'Ortega' (hardy German variety). I don't reckon much of the one I bought so far though, they're only really just starting and will take 3 years to bear fruit at least.
My expensive garden centre vine (Muller Thurgau) is doing great though.

Kiwis I would buy but then they need warmth to ripen and I have nowhere to put them - they're a vine. I also read that they can take up to 7 years to start producing and the Aldi plants are only ever around a year old.

Gooseberries - I planted some earlier in the year but the plant failed. It wasn't an Aldi plant and Gooseberries are supposed to be quite hardy. I'm not going to bother though.

Blueberry - Tempting, but I bought some from Aldi the other day and they were horrible so that put me off.

                            Loganberry and Tayberry - maybe.

Fig - it'll probably be Brown Turkey, I'll have a look sometime. I already have a Brown Turkey Fig plant though and have told myself I'll resist buying more plants. With figs you have to remember that they need some warmth and sun in summer to come into leaf and bear fruit. The fruit then takes two years to ripen so it is a good idea if you have two that you can harvest one each year. The main thing to watch out for in this country is water damage to the figs themselves.
I might get another fig plant.

Gojj berry - heard of it but don't know what the heck it is.

That advert says no need for a garden, just keep them in pots. I suppose you'd have to re-pot after a while though, the Aldi pots will only be good for a few months.

Oh, by the way - you can see what they'll be stocking for the whole month on this page:

                              ALDI - Gardening

Or on the Aldi website just hover over the 'info and service' option and select 'Gardening'.

The august plants haven't been posted on there yet but should be on in the next few hours I'd imagine.
