hi -have a fig that is looking decidedly poorly-yellowing leaves with bits brown (not a good look!) its in a pot so i'm not sure whether it needs repotting (only put in in june) or whether it just how it goes in winter. Help please!

raine, I'm sure its just shedding its leaves for winter.

Mine looks pretty sad at the moment too, so don't give up on it just yet. If it still looks sad in the spring, and there are no signs of buds forming, try scraping the bark with your fingernail. If you can see green under the surface then its fine. If its brown then its probably had it.

    But wait til spring.

thanks-i was a bit worried-it cost much more than i would normally pay for a plant but OH always fancied one so i'd like to think we would be able to keep it alive for more than a couple of months!!

Its normal for a fig to loose all its leaves in autumn, It will be fine.
You have to loose sight of the shore sometimes to cross new oceans

I would be a perfectionist, but I dont have the time

As others have said its just shedding its leaves, pop them on the compost heap or in your compost bin so as not to waste them. If its only a young tree or your prone to frosts don't forget to fleece or bubble wrap your fig, move it to a sheltered part of the garden if that's possible. Most figs are frost hardy but better to be safe than sorry, especially when there not cheap to buy.

They are deciduous - you'll end up with a stick which will re-foliate in spring - the Phoenix plant! Mine was a year old cutting and got through last year's wicked winter with no problem. It's in an angle between walls so is protected from winds but it didn't get cossetted.
