  • Fig ice crystal

I went and bought a fig today. There was a choice of brown turkey, brunswick, dalmatie and ice crystal.

I bought the ice crystal and was wondering if anyone else has grown it. It's now in a 5litre pot indoors, when do I send it outside? Presumably I have to repot it as well?

edit: Now wondering if I should have bought one of the other varieties. Maybe I should buy another one..

I've found this little bit of info...hope it helps!!

Fig "Ice Crystal" is a very unusual variety with deeply divided leaves that appear in the shape of ice crystals making this a very ornamental plant. It is very hardy and also produces small sweet edible fruits. Plant in any well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter in sun. Restriciting the root system will encourage fruiting. Self-Fertile.

Lucky grr - I went to buy one with some vouchers, and I had a choice of brown turkey, brown turkey, brown turkey, brown turkey with mouldy fig embryos, brown turkey, and another mouldy brown turkey.

Bunged mine in the GH (unheated), hope it survives

We have a mature fig tree, but goodness knows what sort it is. It seems to have been rather abused over the years (before we moved here), we pruned it a bit (should we have?) and had lots of fruit from it this year. BUT ...... we don't really like figs and gave the fruit to friends!!!

Bramble Killer, I think Ice Crystal is at least an interesting fig to have and while it may or may not produce reliably outside (as opposed to under glass) you'll appreciate it all the more if you have another tree too. If you were closer, I'd give you one of my Brunswick cuttings I took and have since potted on as the leaves grew. If you're the paitent sort, all you need is access to another tree and you can very easily take cuttings for free and grow them on.

Brown turkeys supposed to be the most reliable but if you've got somewhere sheltered I'd recommend also considering Brunswick. The fruit are huge! I'd never seen figs this big before.
