  • Elderflower Cordial

I thought folks on the forum might apreciate this recipe.

Both my mum and step-mum make it on a yearly basis and now so do I.

If you have an allotment, or are anywhere near any sort of park, common land or even cemetery, you'll find thousands of these flowers. It makes it so much nicer knowing that you pinched the ingredients and no-one else would have even thought of doing so!

I know that a bottle from Sainsbury's costs £2.82 for 500ml, but this is easily as nice.

The citric acid in the recipe can be found in small white tubs in Wilkos for next-to-nothing.

    Enjoy

I have been making my own for the last few years and it's lovely . I have it as a drink with soda water or add it to a melon and stawberry fruit cocktail for summer puddings .

It has two chances , up or down.

Just wondered, could this be made into ice cubes? My idea is to fill a glass of water........plonk in a couple of flavoured ice cubes and 'Bobs your Uncle'

I love elderflower cordial yummmm and look forward to making some again this year.

Last year I tried freezing a couple of bottles. When defrosted there was a very slight taint/change in flavour, which I didn't like as much as fresh.

I'm hoping to have a go at making gooseberry and elderflower jam or jelly this year, if anyone has got any tips.

Citric acid is available from chemists... especially those that supply drug addicts as they use it to mix in with their drugs !!

Not sure how it would work proportionally with fresh lemons - good luck working it out (let me know if you want me to pop one in the post)

Very easy. When you boil your gooseberries put ONE head of elderflower per pound of berries in with them (in muslin for jam, don't bother for jelly) I am an "if one is good, two will be better" person but the scent and taste of elderflower will be overpowering if you use too much.

                            Hi there,

I know it's not cordial, but I made Elderflower 'Champagne' last year. I used this recipe...

BBC - h2g2 - How to Make Elderflower 'Champagne'

...it's not too much like champagne, and isn't very alcoholic but it *is* very tasty and refreshing and really easy to make.

Thanks PF will follow your advice later on. I love the combination of the two together, made some yummy gooseberry fool with elderflower ice cream last year.

Mmm sounds good too Rob, I love elderflower wine (which was very strong) so this might be better to drink on a sunny afternoon!
