  • Disco time!

I picked the first of the Discovery apples in the last few days - largely to stop the wasps eating them! Also saw the first ones appearing in the supermarkets. We've also recently had the first of our cookers; Reverend Wilks and Grenadier.
It's always nice to have the first apples and to see the Disco's with tinges of red inside the flesh (not something that you're likely to see in shop-bought apples).
Discovery is one of my favourite apples for home-growing since it's one of the earliest, has good flavour, is very disease resistant and is not too vigorous growing. The wasps like them, so there can be moderate losses to pests when the fruit is ripe.
Picture below of one I've just eaten - this apple was forcibly removed from the tree and some of the pips were still white-ish, so it is not quite ripe (it still tasted good!).
They can have even more red inside when really ripe. The red colour seems to enhance the slight taste and smell of strawberry that these apples can contain.
