Currant cuttings- are they red? White? Black? Oh dear...

    Currant cuttings- are they red? White? Black? Oh dear...

    I took a lot of cuttings off my red, black and white currants last year. The good news is most of them appear to be putting out nice new leaves, hurrah!

    The problem is I forgot to label them, and now I have no idea which is which. I think I might be able to tell the blackcurrants- but is there any way short of letting them fruit to tell red from white?

    I know red currants are very distinctly different from black. from memory, there are multiple heads per shoot on the reds. I'd have to have a real good look to describe that better. I have no idea about whites though.

      I can't tell my whites from my reds but blacks are very different. The smell of the leaves is enough!

        Whites and reds are very similar. I think you'll have to wait for the fruit.

          I've also taken cuttings of each. The blacks smell of blackcurrant, the reds seem to have a more horizontal pattern of growth than the whites which grow reasonably straight vertically.

          At least mine do!

            I think white currants have a slight red tinge to the leaves and redcurrants are just green. As already said, Blackcurrants you should be able to smell from the leaves

              You can even identify the black currants by smelling the cuttings. No need to wait for flowers of leaves...

                I thought I could do blackcurrants by smell, thanks for confirming.

                The problem with the others is that I'm going to give a few away, as it looks like more than I need have struck- good looking leaves are starting to grow on quite a lot of them.

                By the way, how long do you leave them for before moving them is a good idea? I'm guessing they want a while longer.

                  I'm in the same situation so would like to know too. I dug one up to check it's roots and there's hardly any there, even though it's beginning to put on growth. All fruits are better moved when dormant i'm sure so i would guess at waiting till next autumn/winter when they become dormant again. Again i'm guessing this is how you receive them when ordered from nurseries.

                  I hope i'm wrong as i'd like to get rid of them and recover the space ASAP.
