It looks like a crab apple. Not edible straight from the tree, but can be used for jams, wines etc.

My vote goes for crab apple too. I made my wife try one from the tree, so funny watching her face

They're packed with pectin, so aid the setting of all what has been mentioned above

I googled crab apples for a friend last year who found a tree on a derelict piece of land near her, there are oodles of recipes. I expect there are some on here too. Enjoy.

what are you going to do with the tree now you know what it is, harvest and make jams, or you considering removing it. i pressume this is in your garden or someone you know? with it only being 10ft or so it should be ok to move to another location, depending on the root mass,

I like to use crabs to boil up as if I were making jelly - cook and strain well, then add the juice to fruits that don't set so well. I've got a fabulous Raspberry, Blackberry and Crab Apple Jelly at the moment. Ma loves it as it's fruity but has no pips to get under her dentures!

Thankyou for everyones quick reply, sorry its taken me so long to reply myself but I have been flat out with a bad back. Ok well the tree in question is within the boundaries of a supermarket so I dont know what the protocol would be, they also have pear and apple trees which people have been taking the fruit from. Presumably if I go ask the manager then that would be ok? The tree is laden with them and would be a shame to see them go to waste.

I don't think the supermarket would use them - they'd be more interested in importing such fruit from south america or similar.

Personally, I'd just take them but I guess there is no harm in asking

I doubt that they planted them there especially, anyway!
