  • Bought a tatty Victoria plum........

Tesco's were selling these off, reduced from £7.00 to £2.23 (no idea where they came up with THAT price?)

Anyway, it looked a bit dried up but when I scraped a bit of the bark there was green in the cambium!

I'll give it a go as my last Victoria died after a single season for some reason.

patron saint of supermarket/diy chains who do their best to kill off plants more like!

i feel like the plant equivalent of the RSPCA sometimes rescuing stuff thats near death! i recently got a most tatty 'Katy' apple tree and a small eucalyptus for £5 from one and a Budleia that consisted of a moss covered pot and a twig for £1......i figured the pots they were in were worth a pound or two so.....

Thankfully they seem to have responded to treatment the apple is budding nicely and the budleia is growing up a storm......ornamental grasses are a good one they look terrible before sprouting again so these places sell them off really cheap......

i am in the give it a try category!

B&Q is the best for this kind of thing near the end of summer / autumn, they tend to massively reduce all their bigger expensive plants to silly prices. The last 2 years i've got an Acer for £5 because it had very few tatty leaves on (it was autumn!), they are now thriving. They were also selling Banana plants for £5 from £30ish and many others besides.

I 'rescued' a Victoria plum from Morrison's a couple of years ago. It was, to all intents and purposes, dead. It had half a dozen dried up buds, which fell off when I opened the polythene wrapper and precisely three roots, none longer than 3 inches and one broken in half. I planted it anyway and watered it well. I also tipped on the contents of The Bucket from time to time - thought the nitrogen might help. At the end of May it suddenly produced some strong leaf shoots, which were immediately attacked by greenfly. This was the one and only occasion I have used a chemical on my plot. It is now a strong, healthy tree, about 6ft tall and I'm hoping for fruit this year. Give it some TLC, Snadger and you might be lucky.
Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.

My Mother does this all the time! She keeps having to give me trays of pansies as her garden is full but "they were reduced to a pound and looked so sorry for themselves..........."
