  • Bought a Cherry Tree-Will it fruit this year?

    Hi everyone,

I've just bought a cherry tree (Sunburst) It is in very good condition, over a meter tall with many buds.

As this is my first attempt at fruit trees I was wondering if anyone could advise whether I can expect any fruit from it this year?

I plan to keep it relatively medium sized and in a large pot. Any advice would be very much appreciated. (I'm a veggie grower normally and last year my blueberries, redcurrants and strawberries were a bit of a dissappointment!

Thanking you all in advance.. Victoria x

Mine fruited first year (was about 7 feet), (was in poor soil too) unfortunately the pigeons got to them before we did, so the next year we put loads of cds and strings of bottle tops on and we got the lot
The next year we moved it to the new house and the pigoens were obviously cleverer cos they stripped it even with all the danglies.
No idea what will happen this year.

I would say it probably will, but I agree with Janeyo, the birds will have em all if you dont protect it.
They get far more of mine every year than I do.

Urmmm...please correct me if I'm wrong.....but if it was barerooted, then you should remove the flowers this year so te goodness goes into growing an established rootsystem- and then consequent years should provide bigger crops.

If it was pot grown- then I'm not so sure- but I did understand that fruit trees shouldn't be allowed to fruit until they are a few years old??????

I'm sure you could leave a few flowers on ...just to check it out!!!

I bought 2 cherry trees from Lidl last week, but not planted them yet, as up to a couple of days ago we had snow lying, do you think I should put them in on Saturday???

They are dormant until you plant them anyway. I am moving house in 10 days time and that also means moving my garden (eek) I plan to get my tree in as soon as possible. I really think it shows a lot of potential.

Wish I had a Lidl or Aldi near me! They always seem to be doing great things.
