  • Blackcurrants

Picked loads of blackcurrants from next door (said to get them as he was not interested) they were so big - I made 8 pounds of blackcurrant jelly ready for the store cupboard - he has promised me some cuttings so will be putting them in the tunnel.

Wow, that’s a lot of blackcurrants!

I planted some last year, and am looking forward to them fruiting next year ;-)

Goodness me! you did well. I have had a bit of a bumper crop this year.
I made half my haul into a Ribena type cordial and managed to let the other half burn in the jam pan

Been looking at black currant recipes to make stuff other than jelly (15lbs to use up). There's a couple of interesting sauces to use with meat. And I may try altering a gooseberry ketchup recipe .

Any one have any more savoury recipes as there's only so much jam, jelly, conserve, compote or summer pudding that can be consumed in a year (and there's the red currants, gooseberries, raspberries, strawberries and blackberries to do as well)

The blackcurrant cured salmon sounds tempting.

Dry the berries and leaves to make a tea. Never done this but plan to.

You need to be cautious with blackcurrant leaf tea. It (and raspberry leaf tea) used to be used in the third trimester when it can ease labour but earlier on in a pregnancy can cause complications.

When I say "you" I don't mean you, I just mean to anyone to be careful if pregnant or trying to become pregnant or giving it to anyone who may be pregnant.

we got 3 washing up bowls picked yesterday and OH blanched them so they can go into the freezer until we decide what we want as we still have loads of jams and ice cream made earlier this year from last years lots, gooseberries next by the look of it, with rhubarb juice with breakfast I don't think we will ever have a poor diet..

After picking 15lbs of black currants the other day and not really having anything to use them in I was thinking of pulling at least one of the bushes.

Picked another 5lbs of the stragglers today and I'm contemplating putting in another bush or two.

The reason for the change? Home made blackcurrant cordial. It doesn't even have alcohol in it.
