  • Blackberry Bush

    Hi Everyone!

Hope you can help. I've got a blackberry bush growing at the back of my lottie that my son wants to keep, is there anything that I need to do i.e. prune it or should I just leave it to its own devices.

    Thanks in advance

I've been told that blackberries thrive on neglect Certainly seems to be the case for our wild ones round here.

BUT, they can get quite big so I suppose a prune when they are looking unruley would help..?

Another grape with more experience of blackberry care will hopefully asnwer this one better

Thanks Shortie, I'm sure you are right. My son wanted me to buy a blackberry bush but luckily we've got a free one.

        hi bex
from my opinion i would say prune. prune off the old branches that have fruited then build a frame with two wooden posts then string the strong wire supports start at 3 ft the go in 1 ft spacings too about 6 ft, then tie in branches to the lefthand side then with the new growth next year tie into righthand side and cut down left side then continue rotation each year. hope this helps.

Spot on NTTP. If you've got some muck or compost give it a mulch as well.
