  • Aldi grape vines?

Has anyone got one and does anyone know what varieties they are?

I bought one today labelled as "green grape" (I wish they'd be more specific). I'm hoping it's something like Triomphe d'Alsace or Seyval Blanc really, I've already got a Muller Thurgau and fancied a hybrid vine this time.
The vine I already have was expensive (15 quid) but has done very well, I saw these 5 quid vines at Aldi and thought I'd chance it. If they're a variety which won't ripen well in our climate I might grow the vine up the porch at the front as an ornamental (I have no greenhouse).

Mine has one bunch growing on it - no idea the variety but for the price I was willing to take the chance. Bearing in mind my huge 5 yr old one has no grapes on it at all - I'm a happy bunny.

And my Aldi blueberries both have more berries on them than my costly ones from nurseries ever produced.

And my Aldi sour cherries and some Bramley windfalls [all purchased last spring] are currently on the hob cooking down for Sour Cherry Jelly.

      Today? New in?
      *excited*
      I want one!

I need some bread so I might convince myself a trip to Aldi is in order.

The grape vines have been there a few days and are quite small, a few months old. They look good enough though. There's also red gooseberries and blackcurrants.

Today they're also selling some perennials such as lupins. I got some but they're a bit wilted (the compost was bone dry).

I've just realised - the grape varieties will probably be the European varieties. They don't usually graft hybrids or the American ones. I'd still like to find out what it is, it looks a bit different from Muller Thurgau.

Some bloke in Kent has a vine called 'Dartford wondervine' - it has the world record of yielding 1 ton of grapes! A wine expert reckons it is Vitis riparia (an American type) - apparently they grow like the clappers in England - I want one!
It isn't sold as often because the Europeans dislike the American vines and they're banned for wine making in much of Europe.

I think the "green grape" vines at Aldi might be 'Ortega', a German variety often grown in England. It ripens quite early apparently and is used for wine and table grapes.
Grape vines differ slightly in appearance, the leaves of Ortega look similar to that one I bought and I presume (and hope) that Aldi grew varieties suitable for the UK. Of the main varieties grown, Ortega is the most similar in appearance.

I don't know what the red grape vine is as I didn't buy one, I'd hope it would be Boskoop Glory personally.

Oh, and by the way - Aldi are selling lavender and Hydrangeas next Thursday (19th) if anyone wants to know.

They must have sold out. I suppose you could try a garden centre but you'll be paying garden centre prices now. The grape vine I bought from a garden centre was £15 vs the Aldi vines at £5. Then again it is older and better trained - it should fruit next year, those at Aldi in about 2 or 3.
