  • Re-using potato compost

    Hi
This might seem a stupid question but, being new to composting (and growing my own veggies) I hope you'll forgive me for asking it.
I've just harvested one of my potato containers and was wondering if i could re-use some, or all, of the earth to re-plant the container with another crop of potatoes or if not, could i put the earth in my compost bin?

I wouldn't plant another tub of potatoes in the same compost, but the compost can certainly be re-used. Why not tip some of it into a large pot and grow some leeks or carrots? Might be an idea to mix a little general purpose fertiliser into it first though. You could also try salad leaves in smaller pots.

i've got carrots and parsnips in my old tattie bags - after that the spent cmpost will go in the compost bin to be re-energised for next year

Don't put fertiliser in for carrots though.

I often use it for ornamentals.

              Likewise.

Lordspudz, I think the rule of thumb is that you don't plant spuds where a previous crop have been grow in the ground for at least 3 years. It maybe different for container grown spuds, I'm not sure.
