I have just taken on an allotment and have been down there for a poke around this lunchtime. There are about 3 dalek compost bins on the plot and when i opened each of them, they were full of what I presume to be matured compost ( looked almost like a wet termite mound). Anyway, there were hundreds of black ants crawling all over it inside the bins with what looked like lots of eggs (like large sesame seeds). Has anyone come across this before and will I be ok to use this (ants included). I don't want to start digging useless material into the ground, but at the same time don't want to get rid of valuable compost, if that is what it is.
Any guidance for this novice allotmenteer would be welcomed.
