  • Help with a new allotment!

    Hi

I just wondered if anyone can help me I have just been given an allotment plot which although it is tidy it’s all grass. I was going to dig the turf off the beds and I have been told I can stack this soil to soil & grass to grass to leave it to rot and make loan to add to the beds.
My question is do I need to cover the pile, put layers of manure through the stack, do anything else to it and how long should I leave it for? Sorry for all the questions but I hope you can help

Leave it till the grass disappears and it all looks like just soil

However, make sure it's normal grass and not couch grass (couch has long white brittle roots). If it's couch you must remove every piece of root - you can drown them in a bucket or rot them down in black sacks

Thanks Two Sheds do I need to put manure between the layers and cover it over with something?

No need to add manure, but if you have some, add it to your compost heap or if you have loads pile it in a stack to rot down for a year

Covering your compost heaps (whatever is in them) will help them heat up and rot down quicker
