  • Fertilising with Fish Meal

Hi! I just read recently that Fish Meal can be used as a very effective fertiliser for nitrogen deficient plants. I had a look online, but the only fish meal we have advertised here in Germany is for anglers to use as bait, especially when fishing for carp. Is that basically the same thing as what is sold in other countries as plant feed/fertiliser? Thanks!

Hi Anita & welcome to the vine. I think it may be Blood Fish & Bonemeal you are looking for.

Would using this attract Foxes as it might think there is something meaty and good to eat buried there?

I'm not so sure, Pumpy - I planted rasps and redcurrants with bfb liberally sprinkled round the planting area and the foxes must have walked straight past to dig their huge hole in a newly dug part of the plot!
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

          Thanks everyone for the info....

Think I'll be sticking to just plain bonemeal instead....the only fishmeal I could get my hands on was originally for fishing purposes and made all the plant pots stink to high heaven and attracted flies like crazy. At least with the bonemeal, I know it's for gardening use, so hopefully won't have any such problem!

I seem to remember reading that in Victorian times they had problems with fishmeal on fields attracting vermin, and I know in Scotland they used to dig it into the soil quite deeply - fishing communities were famous for the good soil all the leftovers from the fishing gave them.
