    Default Vegetable seed sowing guide (Reprised)

    This thread is a reminder of what vegetables can be sown in January. It is only a reminder, soil conditions and regional variations should be taken into account. The early content has been reproduced from a thread started in January by one of our December Moms ‘Bigmallly’. The thread has been locked and if you have any additions or indeed any suggestions please PM me.

    January

    Aubergine - Under Glass
    Broad Bean (Aquadulce Claudia) - Sow Direct
    Cauliflower (All Year Round, Freedom, Snowball) – Under Glass
    Celeriac - Under Glass
    Celery - Under Glass
    Chillies - Heated Propagator
    Cress – Indoors
    Kale (Cavolo Nero) – Under Glass
    Leeks - Heated Propagator, Warm Window Sill
    Lettuce (Winter Gem) - Under Glass
    Mustard - Indoors
    Onions
    Pea (Meteor) - Sow Direct
    Rhubarb - Sow Direct
    Sweet Pepper - Heated Propagator, Warm Window Sill
    Sprouting Seeds - Indoors
    Strawberry - Under Glass
    Tomatoes – Under Glass

    January is also when seed potatoes start to be delivered from online suppliers, you can start to chit them now or hold them back by storing them in the salad draw of the fridge

    February

    Asparagus - Under Glass now, last sowing month. Plant out 2nd year
    Aubergine - Under Glass until March/April
    Broad Bean - Direct Sow over-wintering varieties until Mar, other varieties Mar-Apr
    Beans Dwarf French - for an early crop under Glass*
    Fennel
    Onions - if not sown earlier, Feb-Apr main sowing time. bulbing-up triggered by day length so this crop cannot "catch up"
    Parsley - sow until July
    Peppers Chilli & Sweet - Under Glass, sow until Apr
    Potatoes - Start them chitting when they arrive, frost free.
    Rhubarb - Sow Direct, until April.
    Rocket - sow successionally until September
    Shallots - if not sown earlier, Feb-Apr main sowing time
    Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, Cauliflower - sow until April. Don't give the seedlings any extra heat.
    Summer Sprouting Broccoli - un-heated greenhouse
    Hispi Cabbage - Under glass
    Carrots - Amsterdam Forcing etc.
    Celeriac - Under Glass now,sow until April
    Celery - Under Glass now, sow until April
    Cucumber - Under Glass now, needs heat & light, sow until April
    Kohl Rabi - Under Glass
    Leeks (Summer)
    Meteor peas
    Parsnip - sow until April.
    Tomatoes - sow now for an early start for glasshouse crops, they need heat and benefit from extra light; main sowings March ownwards.

    Start sowing in March:

    Artichoke (until Apr)
    Beetroot (until July)
    Broad Bean - Non over-wintering / tender varieties (until Apr)
    Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, Cauliflower (until Apr). Don't give the seedlings any extra heat.
    Carrots (until Jul)
    Celeriac - (until Apr) - Long season crop, don't delay!
    Celery - Under Glass (until Apr)
    Cucumber Under Glass (until May)
    Endive (until Aug)
    Gherkin (until Apr)
    Herbs (Chives, Coriander, Dill, Oregano, Parsley, Sage, etc)
    Kale (until May)
    Kohl Rabi (until Jul)
    Lamb's Lettuce (Corn Salad) (until Aug)
    Leeks (until Apr)
    Lettuce (until Jul)
    Mangetout Peas (until Jun)
    Pak Choi (until Aug)
    Parsnip (until Apr)
    Peas (until Jun)

    Start*sowing*in April:

    Beans, Dwarf French (as a Greenhouse crop - this month)
    Brocolli, Sprouting (for next Spring) (Until Jun)
    Florence Fennel (until Jul)
    Melon Under Glass (this month)
    Potatoes - need earthing-up/protecting with fleece against late frosts
    Squash, Courgettes, Marrows - raise under glass, must be frost free - don't be in too much of a hurry - Mid-month will do
    Swede (until Jun)
    Sweetcorn (until May or maybe Jun) - raise under glass, must be frost

    Runner and French Beans ( OK towards the end of the month) - raise under glass, must be frost free.
    Chinese Cabbage

    Continue to sow - LAST MONTH!:

    Artichoke (Globe)
    Aubergine - Under Glass
    Broad Bean - Non over-wintering / tender varieties
    Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, Cauliflower. Don't give the seedlings any extra heat.
    (Summer Cabbage and Cauliflower can continue to be sown for another couple of months)
    Celeriac - Long season crop, don't delay!
    Celery
    Gherkin
    Leeks
    Parsnip
    Peppers Chilli & Sweet - Under Glass
    Salsify & Scorzonera
    Shallots - Feb-Apr main*sowing*time
    Tomatoes Under Glass

    Still time to sow, if not sown earlier:

    Beetroot (until July)
    Carrots (until Jul)
    Cucumber Under Glass (until May)
    Endive (until Aug)
