Going to stick my neck out here as nobody has so far answered you Chrismarks.
As far as I know, a seed potato is from certified disease free stock. You can grow spuds from shop bought ones, i've done it myself, but they are not guaranteed disease free and in fact I believe some supermarket spuds are treated with a retardent to prolong their shelf life so may then be difficult to chit and grow.
I have no doubt that somebody else will be along at some time today to put us both right.
In the meantime, I hope this helps.

Okay today I put on me glasses and went for a closer look. The tips actually look more purple than black. So hopefully everythings ok.

Well now, aren't we all clever - we must all have been paying attention in class. Like a lot of grapes I always hesitate to answer a question unless I am 100% certain I know what I'm talking about. Thanks for the (virtual)pats on the back Tattieman. It doesn't mean we don't need you, just that you're a good teacher!!

Just to prove that we need you, Tattieman ....

What is the minimum size container I could get away with using for charlottes? (Sorry for novice question, but this will be my first attempt at potatoes).

    Many thanks
    Caro

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish, and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day

I would say a 10 litre container would be the smallest size that would be worth planting in. Give it a try and let me know.
