  • Need help on my lottie - looking for someone to share

    Hi,

I'm looking for someone to share my allotment in Huddersfield - HD7 area - its not full size but it does need some re-arranging and sorting out but it isn't a total mess!!

The ideal would be to work it with someone, decide jointly what to grow and share the produce. If you are interested, please send me a message.

    Thanks, Polo

Have you checked your site rules to see if you're allowed to share? That would be my first concern.

I'm not against sharing at all, in fact I've done it myself, but it is frowned upon. Not only do you have any Tom Dick or Harry wandering onto the site, but problems arise about who is responsible for the plot, who pays the rent etc.

We just last week had a situation where the brother of a plot-holder got all stroppy because he wasn't allowed to vote ... he'd only put himself up for election, and he's not even an official plot holder. He also can't just take over his brother's plot like that, he has to go on the waiting list like everyone else.

So not to put you off, I'm just pointing out you might like to keep it all quiet like, between you and someone you know & trust.

The better way might be to ask your site manager to officially divide your plot in half so they can allocate the other half to someone on the waiting list.

Sharing a plot with a comparative stranger can be a bit tricky. You will really need to hit it off well and trust the other person to share the produce - nothing worse than looking forward to sampling something tasty, only to find it has been harvested by your plot mate just hours before.
I got over my difficulties by paying someone to help me out for a while. Once the plot is sorted, it is easier to keep it that way.

Thanks for the advice guys. I am very clear what I want - I will keep responsibility for the plot and pay the rent and will be very careful who is allowed on the site.

But thanks - I realise this may not be easy to do but after waiting for so long to get my plot and to enjoy the last two years there I am loathe to give up or reduce the plot in the short term.
