  • Looking for an Allotment in Inverclyde, Scotland

    Hi guys!

This one is a bit of a long shot, but I thought I'd give it a go.

I'm looking for an allotment in Inverclyde, Scotland, most likely Greenock. Now, I known there are a number of allotments in the area, but getting in touch with them is somewhat problematic. I've been able to get in touch with Caddlehill and am currently waiting for them to send me a registration letter to get on their waiting list.

I've had a hard time finding any information on allotments in the area in general, I've tried contacting Inverclyde council but the only information they were able to give me was that they "do not own any sites in the area."

So, now I'm here in hope that a plot holder on one of the sites is lurking in the depths of the forum. But if anyone in the west of Scotland can provide any information on allotments in the West that would VERY much appreciated.

      Hi Craig and welcome!

Your best bet may be to visit the sites and make yourself known. Ask who to contact - maybe there's a notice board or a site hut.

              Hey again!

Finally on the computer (original post sent from mobile) so can provide a little more information regarding my search!

In regards to th elink from Inverclyde now: this is something I've had my eye on for quite some time, however at this moment things appear to have stalled, the woman dealing with the drive to get allotments established says things may continue, but it won't be for quite some time.

Lemmon Street Gardens (which i think has the most WONDERFUL name) is another funny one. A family friend is a plot owner there. Originally council owned [as far as I'm aware] these plots are now owned by a local housing association. There are 5 plots on site, however only two are allocated. I asked that particular housing association a few years ago, and they said they had no interest in letting the vacant plots. My friend suggested i "squat" on site, but I'm not sure that's exactly wise.

I've just sent an email to Wellington Street gardens, that blog post is fairly old, but the email address is a gmail one.. so fingers crossed!

I think my best bet, as you both suggested is to pop in to the allotments one day and hope that there's someone there that can point me in the right direction.

                  Just a quick update.

Sent an email to the local housing organisation regarding Lemmon Street Gardens... still no response.

Went up to Wellington Street this afternoon (lovely dry day here) but the place was closed up.

Turns out however, a colleague of mine in the library is a holder at Caddlehill, and is going to get me some more info, as well as pass my details on to someone from Wellington Street that can help me. (Just how we went so long without talking about allotments I'll never know!)

                  Fingers crossed!

                    Update!

The back and forth with the local housing association continues. I've been passed around 3 different departments and nobody really has a clue what's going on, I think they're hoping I'll forget and give up. Not bloody like you!

This would be my ideal site as my sister just got new windows in her house and I have 7 old windows sitting in the shed just waiting to be put to use.

Caddle Hill sent me a letter, so I'm now on the waiting list! Hurrah!

I was on my way to training with work on Wednesday and took a drive past Wellington Street as I do every Wednesday, luck would have it that someone was just locking the gate as I crawled along in the car. I managed to speak to him for a few minutes, he took my email address and said he'd pass it on to the committee, who emailed me yesterday with the necessary forms, which where sent back almost immediately haha!

Hopefully the waiting list isnt too long!

                        Update!

Think I MAY have a plot!

Was working this morning but had a missed call from the head of the committee at Caddlehill, phoned her back at lunch time and was told that they were having a wee get together tomorrow afternoon, and asked if I wanted to come along, she also mentioned that they had a few plots going spare, so I was welcome to take a look and see if there was one that I fancied.

So I'm meeting her at 1pm tomorrow to sort things out.

It's sort of bitter sweet, I could end up with a plot, but I hadon't resigned myself to not getting good news is year, and never started any of my seeds. Typical! Haha!

Excellent news - and a choice of plots
Plenty of time to start seeds outdoors so no worries there!

I hope it's good news for you, and as Veggiechicken says still lots of time to sow seeds or even buy plug plants.

I'm sure I'll be able to pick up a few bits and bobs from friends and family 😊🌻
