  • Another admin problem........

Do not even think about volunteering for an Allotment Association Secretaries job!
I did and it's driving me round the twist! You become the agony Aunt of the plotholders all day and every day!

Been putting off sending out eviction notices for ages but had to send three out last week. Waiting for the come back from this!

In the mean time one of the allotment holders is building a hacky greet big shed right next to the sunward side of his neighbours fence and I've been asked to intervene!
I can't find anything in the tenency agreement about 'right to light' but out of curtesy he should have asked his neighbours permission I suppose.

I just hope I can keep my head down and that it will be settled amicably (pistols at dawn!?)

Started to gather some paperwork together for our AGM and realised I have a pile as thick as a telephone directory.

Have to sort out skip removal, new skip, soil conditioner & woodchippings this week. Just sorted fencing, road restoration and tap replacement. It's worse than having a proper job!

Whatever happened to just going to the lottie to UNWIND!

Rant over.................If you can't stand the heat you should get out of the kitchen I suppose.

Shhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!.......Yep you're right, but if that was enforced (which it never has been!) with the amount of 'unofficial' sheds errected on every plot I would be buried under a pile of paperwork the size of a shed!

actually i wasn't considering denying permission, more 'subject to location' that way he could have his shed, but would have to put it in a postition more suitable to his neighbours.

The problem is the guy has been there for umpteen year......he was Sec, way back in the eighties! He would effectively be the first person in 50 years who had been asked to move his shed........and I get on really well with him!
Still................ think discretion is the greater part of valour.........now where can I hide?

Rubbish! if thats what he was then he should damn well know better, if you get on well with him ask him, nicely, if he has considered he will be cutting out his neighbours sunlight, sort of ' oh the admin thing is so hard sometimes, i am dreading people moaning about things like sheds cutting out light etc.what did your neighbours say about yours?'

Do you not have a committee to help with some of this Snadger? Between work, home and lottie committee you can't have time to do anything.

Lol.........yep we have an Association Mafia if thats what you mean?

Just don't fancy sharing the bed with a horses head!

This is really my point..............a Secretary is in charge of the mundane paperwork, full stop.

Part of it's my own fault I spose as every crackpot idea that's emanated from the 'Mafia' I've acted upon and brought to a conclusion. There is so much the Association has missed out on over the years and yours truly, trying to make an impression has tried to put the world to rights in one term of office.
They've never had any of the stuff I've managed to get them and subsequently it's a case of 'Give it to Snadge, he''ll sort it out"

Wonder if I can approach the Treasurer to finanace a 'fact finding mission' to Barbados to see how the Barbadian allotment societies work?

Now you've made your impression learn to delegate. Easier said than done when people assume you'll do it as I well know but I've even learnt to say no this season to the cricket committee I'm on and guess what - everything has still got done cos others have done it
Barbados sounds a good idea. Do you need a PA? I'll be everso efficient

OH is the treasurer of our association and he has had more trouble with a few pounds than he ever had in his real job where he dealt with thousands. God knows what is going to happen when he increases the shop prices next year, they have not been increased for 3yrs.

I think someone once said never volunteer for anything, think they may have had some thing there.

If you want something done, give it to a busy person...they've got you by the short and curlies me thinks - not sure whether a is appropriate for sorting all the stuff out for them or a for what you've got yourself into!

On our site, you have to submit a plan to the society for approval for any permanent structure (shed/greenhouse) saying what it is, how big it is, and with a plan of where it will be going on your plot (x marks the spot!). You can't start putting it up until you have written permission.

This is written into the terms and conditions of membership.

Haven't heard any bad press about this from other allotment holders, so I think it's working well.
