  • Allotments in South Ribble, Preston, Lancs

Hi everyone! I've got the gardening bug from digging up my back garden and was wondering if anyone knew about allotments in south ribble? I've emailed the local council but havent heard anything back yet. I know there are allotments in Moss Side, Bamber Bridge and Penwortham - are there any in Lostock Hall? Does anyone know of availability on these sites?
Just testing the water at the moment, but you never know I may take the plunge! Many thanks dexterdog

        Hi Dexter,

I have an allotment on Penwortham Holme and I live in Bamber Bridge. I'm sure there are sites available there. In fact the allotment next to mine is looking a bit rough and the guy hasn't been in months!

          Hi Clareg
Is Penwortham Holme the one near the river, just south of the pub? (i always use pubs as landmarks!!), or rather I should say, the pub on the bend in the ribble and the methodist church?
How big is your plot/vacant plot? How much does it cost? Who do I need to contact if I'm interested?
          Many thanks

            Hi Dexterdog,

My allotment is on the other Penwortham Holme site, If you follow Leyland Rd to the end and turn right at the traffic lights onto Liverpool Rd, then there is a right turn before you cross the bridge over the Ribble.

I have a full plot size I don't have the measurements on me but I will find out. It costs £19 per year to rent. The one next to mine is also a full size plot but a different size (mine is square, the other is rectangular). But there are other plots available.

There is an "official" on site most days in the morning and over the weekend, so you'd be welcome just to come and have a look around. I'm at work at the mo, but I'll find out the number for you and post another message.

dexterdog, their is no point emailing the council, they might email you back i about 2 years. Try talking to people nearby as they will have the most knowlage ! Also do you have a parish council they might help

Thanks Clareg. Actually, I sneaked a little drive past earlier today (on works business you understand! I'm not let out on my own very often! ). I may get chance to pop down tomorrow, and if I see anyone I will ask, but yes, if you could find out the relevant phone numbers that would be good. Thanks. dexterdog

                  Hi Adam
Yep, know exactly what you are talking about! Emailed South Ribble a few months ago to the recycling guru - took her ages to reply to my simple question.
Hope the website is going strong!
                  Best wishes

                    Hi DextorDog,

I have dug out last years invoice for the allotment rent, the tel number on there is for the Leisure Admin dept on 01772 906470, if its not the right number I'm sure they will redirect you. The allotments are "Penwortham Holme West". It's well worth popping down and getting a feel for the area.

One thing that is important is the Riverworks Project currently being looked at by Preston City Council. I don't know if you have heard of it but it involves a lot of commercial and housing development along the river ribble. Unfortunately, the pilot study they did showed the allotments as housing! We have been told by our allotment committee that a strong protest is already underway involving a lot of people not just allotmenteers. We've been advised to keep the allotments in the best possible condition so the council don't have any justifiable reason for closing them.

Hi Dexter Dog - my old office window (until someone higher up the food chain decided they wanted it and hoofed me out into a battery office) used to look down Fishergate Hill towards the allotments by the bridge. Did you manage to get a site as I notice that in the last few months there has been a push to clear up some long-term empty sites near the bottom of Penwortham Hill.
