  • Yellow Cabbage and Cauli leaves

    Hi all,
My cabbage and caulis on allotment are growing very well. Just noticed that the bottom leaves (1 or max 2) of the plants seem to be yellowing. Is this natural? or is it some sort of deficiency? I water the plants once every 2 days or so.

The bottom-most leaves quite often die off on brassica, in my experience. Just remove them when they drop off so that they don't harbour pests and diseases (fine to compost them). If you get more than one or two yellowing, then you may need to add some nitrogen to the soil - chicken manure pellets are great for that, or nettle tea

just been out to earth up my potatoes and the bottom leaves are also yellowing.. is it ok just to bung some chicken pellets directly into the potato bag that they're growing in?

will chicken pellets be slow in releasing the nitrogen? I did feed them with some liquid seed weed fertilizer a 2 days back. Is that ok for now?

If it's only the bottom one or two leaves, they should be fine on that Reks

What sort of soil do you have? If it's a bit sandy/free-draining then you might be better off using pelleted fertilizer rather than liquid so that the nutrients aren't washed away when you water. If it's clay or nice loam, then the liquid stuff will be fine.

ckfe, chicken pellets can be chucked in the bottom of your watering can and swirled into the water which might be an easier way to get them into the bags evenly (remember to take the rose off the spout). But don't forget that potatoes need some potassium as well, so tomato food would be useful too

SarzWix - mine is not sandy for sure, think a bit on the clay side. Is it ok to put some chicken pellets too in the bottom of each plant. And yes its just few of the bottom leaves.
