  • Where do you buy your green manure seeds?

Am determined to start moving towards using green manures and doing less digging. Found what looks to be a good source of seeds online, but before I knew it I had nigh-on 20 pounds worth of seeds in my basket: caliente mustard, phacelia and yellow trefoil.

So before I went ahead and bought them, I just thought I'd get some advice on here.

Where do you guys get your seeds?

There are usually loads of green manure seeds over in the Wyevale seed sale. I have also been known to buy from Premier Seeds Direct on occasion. I'm also going to grow more green manure now that I have the extra plot so that I don't have to rely on getting hold of animal manure.

I've never sown a green manure as I'm worried about the ones that need to be dug in - too much like hard work for me!
I'd choose one that died off and didn't need to be dug in or pulled up.

      This site looks useful https://www.greenmanure.co.uk/pages/...t-green-manure.

I bought mine from chilterns last year but I ordered other bits so it made sense. First time I have tried green manures.

I just bought it from the local garden centre, but that wasn't a very big pack, so I could do with broadening my horizons.

Thanks, guys. In fact, VC, they're the place I was looking at. Having checked out the other options, weight for weight, the price is cheaper than some places, though not cheaper than Premier Seeds Direct, especially once you've taken postage costs into account. PSD do really quick delivery too, in my experience.

            I shall ponder on.

            Edited to correct spelling mistake.

OK, so purchase made, same place just smaller packets (no point being greedyy). I'll get spinach back in Spain and also grow that à la Gertrud Franck. You can get huge boxes of spinach seeds there. Maybe they use it for the same reason. Anyway, thanks for all the help, guys. And especially VC, who provided the initial oomph and inspiration.

^Hi Dalrimple, check out the link VC posted in the third message in this thread. Lots of good info on the what, when and how for a load of different green manures, including mustard.

I'm curious as to how people use green manures alongside having a no-dig methodology - is it possible ?

Would doing a chop and drop suffice, or would you have to then cover it over to stop new growth ?

(I realise that different green manures might need different actions).

I "think" you could chop it off (the stems) with shears and let them stay on the surface as a mulch.
Some are killed by frost - they're the ones I'd choose. Less work = more time to play.

The green manures I'm buying include caliente mustard, which needs to be dug in for maximum biofumigation effect. But I'm hoping to lop off the others and, depending on the crop that follows, to leave them on the surface as a mulch.
