  • What's best to do now on new allotment

    Hi
A new allotment site was opened in April, I got a site in June that one person looked at and wasn't interested, next, one of the committee took it on but flared up a neck complaint so has gone back to his own garden. My problem is that I haven't been able to do anything to it since I got it (very bad start to pregnancy). We've had almost non stop rain for past two months, so lots of wet, heavy soil and weeds. Planning on raised beds as it is on a slope.

The site are happy that it will take most plot holders a while to get going, and actually aren't worried if I don't do anything while pregnant but I would like to do something while I can.

I've got some fruit bushes waiting in pots to go in but looking for suggestions of what else to do now. Planning on tackling a little bit at a time, should as I clear an area sow green maures for overwintering?

    Thanks
    Elsie

    Put the kettle on.

Draw a plan of the site

Map out where the sun travels and if anything is in shade etc.

Work out where you want your permanent fruit.

Then take some pens and pencils and start drawing out what you want and where you want it.

Before spending on wood for raised beds, do the first year by just marking them out and putting paths in so that if you change your mind, you've not wasted any money.

And now, I'd get some fruit in, and prepare a bed for garlic and onions from sets and prepare the rest for next spring.
