    What would you look for in a plot?

    I may be in the lucky position to have a pick of at least two plots on two different allotments in the beginning of the new year.

    So I'm wondering how to make the decision? Are there any ways of working out which is best (Apart from of course the condition of the plot/weeds etc)?

    Any help would be appreciated!

    I would look at the aspect (NSEW) and access. What amenities are there on site (water/sheds/storage)? Is there an allotment club/society, and what are their rules? Unfortunately, you also have to consider security, is the site open to all and sundry, or secure?

    Also, look at the state of the soil. For example, personally, I would prefer clay, but that's because it's all I know. I suspect you'll get a feel for the place, and will know which you prefer. However, if you weigh up the pros and cons, and really can't choose between them, then go for the nearest one. It'll save you time and money in travelling, and you'll be more likely to 'just pop down' even when the weather is against you.

      In order, I would go for:

      1) nearest to my house or work
      2) best aspect (south facing)
      3) no overhanging or shading trees
      4) water on site
      5) sheds allowed
      6) security: is the site often vandalised?

      Weeds shouldn't faze you, they will die back eventually given enough elbow grease, and fertility can be built up over the years

        Cheers guys. That all makes sense. They are pretty equidistant from each other so will definitely take a look at the vandalism aspect as that was something I hadn't considered.

        Also the other points are really good too. Will have a wee think about a list for when the time comes

            We were originally offered to choose between two on the same site. The first was like a field that was split up and nothing on it apart from grass and weeds and the second was overgrown but had an established hedge , gate, path and two dilapidated sheds. We went with the second cos it had been worked at some point and had fruit on it. Maybe in a way more work clearing the weeds but It just felt right ............
