  • Sowiing & planting dates

This is really a general question about planting out times for all seed, plant and sets.

For instance I have just bought some onion sets for autumn planting. On the packet it says 'Plant September or October'. Does this mean that it does not matter when you plant in these two months. Or does it mean ' If you live in the north plant Sept and if you live in the South plant Oct, or vice-versa for that matter.

Anyway, I have just planted mine today and I aint digging them up again!

I will trial this myself by planting some more in October but I just wondered if I could learn from someone elses mistakes in stead of mine

to present to him vegetables and all beautiful flowers.- Offerings of Thutmose III to Amon-Ra (1500 BCE)

Snadger, I've just printed off the planner on Nick's website and it's very helpful - it says October but let's face it it feels like October already - Well maybe not today - it was quite hot and sunny up here - spent a couple of hours digging the soil out of my borders (to recycle into my beds) and am a nice shade of pink!

I am doing the same as you Snadger. I put some sets out on Sat and I will do some again in Oct.

In one of my gardening books Snadger, it says that those of use who live upt' north may have to plant things a little later than those who live downt' south - that makes sense methinks when you think about the difference in the weather and temperatures. I tried to find the planner on Nicks website but couldnt - going to have another try now! Good luck with the onions, I'm sure they will be OK. dexterdog

Hi Dexter - the planner on Nick's website - go to the bottom bit and click on 'starter' the last paragraph on the page you get mentions 'planner' in bold and underlined - just click on it. The planner's very useful.
