    Silly Aubergine Question

    Hi

    I will be growing Aubergines for the first time this year and was wondering if they grow the same way as Courgettes that you get plenty of Aubergines from one plant.

    I grew Baby Rosanna and got 6-8 aubergines per plant. I could have got more if I looked after them properly but with the hosepipe ban and having my kitchen done at the same time I left them to themselves for most of the time. They are a bit different to courgette, I treated them more like tomatoes and chillies, I also staked them (they were in grow bags) and fed them with tomato feed after about 6 weeks. It was well worth it - really soft, delicious fruit, it has converted me to aubergines

      Hello PukaTuka, good luck with aubergine. Yes, you should get quite a few fruit from each plant, but I grew 1 last year and got none. Plenty of toms,cucs and peppers but the aubergine only set 2 fruit which both rotted. This year I'll try Baby Belle mini aubergine in the hope of better success. Ansd I'll have more plants so I can experiment a bit with their conditions.

        The Baby Bell mini's look very pretty too - if the picture on the packet is anything to go by!

          Hi
          For the last few years, I have grown aubergine plants, each in a 12" pot, kept in an unheated greenhouse. I have never been that impressed with their performance.... but.... of course..... I will be trying again this year

          what does everyone else do? indoors, outdoors, pot or plot? hot, cold, sunny, shady?

          any advice appreciated.....

            Aubergines like a bit of mollycoddling. Start them off in a warm place and keep them warm till it's time to put them in a greenhouse where the night temperature doesn't fall below 10C. If they get checked by cold they often sulk and won't produce. If, like me, you live in a mild region they can be grown in pots in full sun on a patio. But they don't like the wind, so keep them sheltered.

                I've thought of growing them, but only having a small greenhouse I am going for tomatoes and chillies which I know will give a good crop for the space they take up.
