  • setting up a seeper hose from a water butt

Has any of you guys got a seeper hose set up from your water butt with no electric?

Can you explain how you have done this and what parts I need as I have got an allotment (yes after 5 years of waiting) and I wont be down there everyday and its quite exposed to wind and full sun all day, so either is going to dry out the earth fast.

    Thanks guys

I have one set up in my polytunnel. In my opinion, the pressure generated by a water butt is not sufficient to push the water through the soaker hose - if I was you I'd look into a dripper system instead. I'm getting this delivered today:

Once I've got it set up, I'll let you know if it works better than the hose.

Actually, you said seeper hose, not soaker hose. A seeper hose might work better.

I use a dripper system running off a water but in the greenhouse connected through a timer (so I can set it to water two times a day). Worked ok but the filter keeps clogging up if there's anything in the water (detritus, algae, etc) so I'm updating the filter because at the mo it just uses the little filter on the timer.

There's often a little perforated bit of plastic in the connector that fixes to the butt (not the bit with a single tiny hole - that's the pressure reducer for connecting to the mains, not needed on a water butt set up) - that's the filter, hence the reason they are easily clogged.

I'm popping in something like this in front of the timer so that it doubles up and stops little bits getting into the dripper hoses.

I have one, it works very well off a battery operated timer. It doesn't need pressure as the water just gradually soaks out of porous pipe over a couple of hours. Means I don't need to water everyday

One thing maybe worth mentioning is, the higher the butt is, the better the flow will be so if you can raise the water butt as high as possible it will help..

I found that unless it was about 2ft off the ground, there wasn't enough pressure for the hose to actually leak all along its length (10ft)

I have my butts on their stands on two layers of bricks and 3 layers of pavers.
