  • PSB blunder?

Hello! I think I've made a mistake with my PSB - for some reason I thought you could continue to plant out until late summer, so I planted mine in (very early) September. Now I'm wondering where I got that idea as most places I look seem to say July is the latest. I've given a whole bed over to them and now I'm wondering if it's just a waste of time and space... any advice would be great! Not that I need the bed for anything else at the moment, but come next spring....

How big are the plants now? If they were sturdy plants when you put them out in September I would think they've got to a reasonable size now so they will sail through the winter no problem. Depending on variety you should get a crop April-ish.

They're maybe a foot tall? Some of them are a bit floppy looking and they've all been bothered by slugs but I think they're reasonably healthy. Is the issue just that if they're not big enough they won't survive the frosts? Thanks!

leave them unless you plan on using the bed for something else. If they survive the frosts, you have lost nothing.
I plant mine out late, and normally fine. You will get a late harvest, so remember that in spring when you are getting ready to plant out other things, they will still be standing there.

I only got mine sown at the end of August (slightly late) but they're all doing fairly well. I dont need the bed until next year either so I'm working on the basis that they might not work, but if they do, great! and if I need the bed they'll come up regardless

Alot of it will be dependent on how mild / cold the winter is too - everything's an experiment for me!!

Same as everyone else - you'll get a late crop, but they should be fine.

I planted my PSB late last year, and this year I was itching to use the space for warm weather crops, but reluctant to cut down such big healthy plants (they didn't really get going till April). They finally produced spears in August! So be warned...

Thanks very much everyone -- I'm reassured. I don't mind waiting till August if there will be PSB at the end of it! And will try to be better organised next year...
