  • planting in a 2 year old muck mulch

    Hi all,

Having taken on a plot that hadn't been worked for years i had many brambles/ blackcurrent, coach grass and weeds to deal with. I cleared, rotovated and marked out the paths with weed membrane. I have since hand weeded with a trowel taking out what roots etc best i could.

I have aquired a large amount of 2 year old horse manure which i'm putting down as a mulch. I will then cover with more membrane and plant straight through it to take care of existing weeds.

Is it ok to plant straight into the mulch or should i dig in manure at planting?

These are the veg i'll grow through the membrane, will these grow ok:
    Onions, garlic and shallots
    Sweet corn
    Brassicas
    Potatoes(through black plastic)
    Squash, pumkin, Courgete
    Peas
    Peppers
    Perenial Herbs(rosemary, tyme etc)

This is my first year growing so all advice for this novice is greatly appreciated.

    Cheers

Sorry had to put on the pictures of the jungle hedges i slaughted and the raised bed i built yesterday form some pallets, just feel some self pride now the plots starting to come together after all the hard work!!!!

    Blackcurrant or blackberry?

If it's blackcurrant, dig them up and put them where you want them. Blackberry ... train into a fence shape if you want to keep them, and dig out any roots you don't want, or they'll take over.

Herbs generally like poor soil. Don't manure them.

I would plant straight into it. The worms will dig for you ... pulling it down into the soil. Save yourself a bit of work.

Blackberry sorry, been on nites still half asleep. They grow everywhere on our allotment but i've left some trimmed in the hedge. They had taken over half the plot when i took it over! Thanks for the advice, that will make things alot easier. Will the potatoes and onion shoots be able to find thier way through the slits in the membrane ok? Also was worried the garlic wouldn't be able to as it's planted deeper and the membrane blocks out the light?

          Cheers again

Personally, I would plant seedlings through the membrane, not sow seeds under it.

Except spuds, which will push up the membrane so you can cut a hole for the foliage.
