  • A newbies ideas about a new allotment

    Hi all

Signed up to my first allotment yesterday, I have put together a bit of a plan and would love some constructive advice! It's a lovely little plot and well maintained by the close-knit community so the world is my oyster, so to speak

There's a bed at the back and trellised beds down the side and a tap by the apple trees so I have planned with this in mind. The sun comes from the side with the beds and the big bush behind the fencing is getting cut back shortly.

Is this achievable for year one? Is there anything obvious I'm missing? Thank you!

Hi Daysocks and welcome to the Vine.
You may not be able to post images directly until you've made a few more posts about 10+

From your photos, it doesn't look as if there's much work needed to get the plot ready to plant up. You've been very lucky to get one in such good condition. I can't really comment on the plan as I don't understand it!! I never have been able to get my head around plans!!
Just grow what you like for the first year and see how it works. Next year you can tweak it from experience.

Hi Scarlet and thank you for the welcome.

I am freshly 30 and looking to get a bit closer to nature and self-sufficiency. I work full time and so does my partner but between us we have a few spare hours over the week and plenty over the weekend.

Looking to grow potatoes, onions/shallots, broccoli, carrots, cabbage and loads of beeeans! As well as having a few fruit bushes/trees, most of which are already on site and already pruned for the coming year

            Hello and welcome, Daysocks.

VC's right, you've got a very tidy looking plot. I'm not sure I understood your plan either, as I can't match it up with the photos of the beds. Certainly looks like you should be able to grow what you're planning and more.

Hope you have a great growing year.

There are a lot of variables in growing things - available time and space, pests soil weather etc so its difficult to come up with a general plan.

A few points some of which others have mentioned ;-

              1) grow what you like to eat
              2) starting things off in pots and containers indoors gives you a a jump on the weather and automatic early protection from pests
              3) some plants will cope with neglect better than others eg raspberry canes, rhubarb
              4) adding organic matter to the soil is always good so check for nearby farms or stables - also give a bit of thought to composting
              5) don't spend money on gimmicky tools, get a good spade and a watering can then go from there
              6) gardeners usually grow more plants from seeds than they really need in the Spring (I do) so check with others so you can swap stuff with them

              Happy gardening
