  • New Allotment

Hi to everyone, I am going to sign for a council allotment after work later, only waited about 15 months so really chuffed. Looking for a bit of advice on what I can be putting in at this stage of the year. This is my first allotment so it will be a steep learning curve from here methinks.

Not too late for peas, beans and lots of the salad crops. Also many garden centres and even B&Q still have veg plants for sale. Also your allotment neighbours will probably pass on their spares. I don't want to dampen your enthusiasm, but at this time of year I'd take advantage of much of the time you have to prepare the ground for next year. Try to cover it once you've cleared it as weeds will grow back at an alarming rate and I've seen too many new allotmenteers give up in despair when they've seen all their hard work recolonized by weeds within days. Getting the soil in good heart though is one of the most important things with veg gardening so I'd put plenty of effort into that. Also first thing, day one, start a compost heap.
Good Luck. Hope the plot is a lovely one

Thanks for the advice bluemoon. It is a brand new plot so unfortunately nobody around yet to ask about plants etc. It is only half a plot but that should be plenty for me at the moment. Will definitely concentrate on getting the soil prepared for next year though. It will probably take most of the weekend just removing stones and the odd weed. At least it has been rotavated so it is really loose to begin with. Will no doubt be asking advice in the not too distant future

John, if it's ready to plant, get cracking!

Buy in some plants (boot sales are cheap), or eBay.
Get the ground covered, or else it will swiftly be colonised by weeds.

If nothing else appeals, stick some pumpkins in, for ground cover
