  • I FINALLY have a grassy old allotment plot! Woo hoo!!

Well thats me! Had a choice of an overgrown grassy allotment or an overgrown grassy and bramble allotment!

So now! I have a lottie!!!! I'm a real veg head!! BUT....... Where do I start!

I need to get rid of the grass. Mark out my plots. Get a shed and a green house. So much to be getting on with! I'm totally chuffed to bits.

The allotment dude says there was a grass killer i could put down but i wouldn't be able to touch the soil for 2 weeks... any ideas on what he'd be referring to? As the only grass killers i know wont allow you to plant in that soil for at least 6 months.... any ideas??

congrats on your new plot,I would cover with cardboard /plastic and dig to remove the roots. You could use glcophosphate weedkiller to clear, but it takes a couple of weeks to work and is'nt 100per cent effective.
best to use a combination of methods

        WHOOP WHOOP!!!

My first allotment was just like a grassy field too, but I managed to grow stuff in the first year Have a look at my photos if you like, on my profile.

The spray he was on about is Roundup or any name under the Glysophate banner it is best sprayed on nice green grass and as the man says leave alone for 2 week's but it do's work and do's not go into the soil as far as i know it is systemic which mean's it kills the roots as well good luck with your plot hope you grow all you want to....jacob

Brilliant Victoria. I'm happy for you. Start a bit at a time. It can't all be done in a day, or a year. Mark off small areas that you can get good results and a sense of satisfaction from. Happy growing.

There must be something wrong with my pc as I can't see any of the pics that you have surely posted....?

Well done, you - I can see that Ipswich is definitely more to your liking now! Problem is that you won't actualy want to get a job now that you have the lottie....

Don't use weedkiller! You won't be able to do anything for ages! get a couple of tarpaulins or loads of cardboard and cover where you want the first beds to be. After a few days of sun the grass will have gone yellow and rotted a bit then you can rake the majority of it off and get digging! Thats what I did - 3 beds done and 4 to go!

You are only talking a couple of weeks before you can plant after using round up.
