  • How big is your allotment???

    Hi everyone,

I am trying to negociate some land from a local farmer for use as an allotment but my question for you is how big is the average allotment?? I Know some are 10rods etc but in farming terms ie acres how much of an acre is that???

    Hi Elmo,

    1 Acres = 160 Square Rods so a 10 rod plot = 0.06250 Acres

Hi, we have a 3 acre plot but this is not all run by us as this is trial grounds for our seeds
But i don't think you would need that amount , think of the amount you want and double it and you will be somewhere near what you want

Most allotments are 300sq yds (which is the 10 rod jobby) mine works out to about 280 sq yds cos a previous tennant dumped al the cr*p at the end & I now have a Devon bank !

The things either side if the lane you drive down when you meet a car & Caravan

They are stone & earth banks at the side of the roads usually they have a short hedge on top but not always.

120 foot by 20Foot (Or 36 Meters by 6 Meters). Your best bet is to work out exactly what you need and plan it out on a map (I have just done this for my plot for next year - Every inch is allocated for). Then go to the farmer and see what he says

We give our plots out as 5 pole plots (same as 5 rod) this is a good size for a family of four to start with if a plot is given up and there is no waiting list we offer it to the neighbours when your doing your map remember most allotments have to be fenced against rabbits etc and the footpath between the plots need to be 3 foot wide to accomadate a wheelbarrow

Mine is about the same as silverfox's -maybe 20ft longer. It has a greenhouse and a shed and costs £18 per year. No water or electricity.

I have two. One is 14m by 9m ie 126 sqm. According to the council plans my second one which is slightly longer and a bit thinner is the same but I am not convinced. Don't forget to ensure you have space for compost bins and water butts as well as greenhouse, shed, paths, ideally a small pond etc.
