Any advice on what to do with fallen apples and is there anything I can plant now please!!>

Fallen apples can be used in lots of ways, apple jelly, jam, chutneys. Or you can cook and puree and store in the freezer for crumbles or pies. You could also have a go at apple wine or making cider. There are lots of recipes here on the vine if you go searching. Good luck

Apples store for ages in boxes in the garage (check regularly for dodgy ones) so you don't have to panic & try to use them all at once.

I'll be making wine with most of the ones that I have.

Go and have a look at the 'what I did today' thread for ideas of what to do now - and can you put your approx location in your profile? It'll help us to help you.

Hello and welcome to the vine

This week I've juiced a bucket of windfalls and turned some into apple sauce for the freezer, as well as making blackberry and apple jelly.

If you ask at your local green grocers they'll give you the boxes and trays they have their apples delivered in, otherwise the boxes only get thrown out.

I was always lead to believe that picked apples usually store well but fallen apples won't...........or did I dream that?

Damaged apples don't store well, it's true, but windfall apples aren't always damaged.

Several ways to store them...only keep the very best with no damage.

Traditional and best way is to have slated shelves like an airing cupboard...i had a fab one of these in the garage that i covered in small gauge chicken wire to exclude rodents.(lent to a neighbour who then sold it when they moved!!)Gives good airflow with none touching.

I find that they store pretty well wrapped individually in newspaper in wooden wine boxes

However...by far the best thing I do is take my renovated press(immensely proud of it!) and set it up outside the pub and invite the village to bring the windfalls along. we freeze loads of juice for the kids and make cider (usually about 300 pints!) We then have several racking sessions and a party in the following spring.
