  • Digging and Chickens

Hello everyone! We"ve finally made a start on clearing our new allotment this week!
We would have started it weeks ago but the council said they"d clear it before we officially took it over on !st November.Got fed up with waiting for them(they can shift themselves fast enough when they want their council tax!) and wanted to make the most of the beautiful weather we"ve been blessed with this week.

But boy,am I out of practice where the digging is concerned!! I used to have my own gardening business and would think nothing of digging all day long. This week I"ve had enough after about 45 minutes!
The positive thing is that the previous plot holder ,for reasons best known to her, decided to TURF the whole plot!! So not many weeds, just lush green grass. We"ve been clearing the turves and taking them home for the chickens! There WAS grass in their run (which is about 100 square feet) but obviously they had scoffed all that in a couple of days! At least I feel a tad more enthusiastic about the plot now (the prospect of clearing it was rather daunting to say the least!) as every bit I clear equals more juicy grass for my girls!
Just a quick update as I realise I"m on the wrong forum for chicken stuff but our 12 ex-battery ladies arrived just over a week ago and they have all settled in to their new home really well. They look a bit scruffy ,a few feathers missing but otherwise in much better condition than we had expected considering the horrific and inhumane conditions which they"ve lived in for the past 18 months. It has been wonderful to see them out in the sunshine, stretching their legs and wings and generally having a good old chickeny time! And they"ve rewarded our efforts with 51 delicious eggs!
I"2s just getting light so time to let them out and then going over the plot for a bit (not too much!) of therapeutic digging!

    Hi M n M (Mmmmm! Chocolate!!)
Know what you mean about the digging....I think it's called 'Getting old'!!!

My lottie's split up into 4'0" beds which makes me feel I've acheived something when I look Back!

    Welcome to the vine btw!
