  • Damn dalek!!!!

Don't really know where to post this little rant, so as it's related to my lottie, I thought this might be the best place.

I took a couple hours off work yesterday afternoon as the weather was proper gorgeous - a real spring day - and thought I'd pop up to the lottie just to have a quick look at how things are doing, and see how my daffies are coming along.

I got there to find my blasted dalek had blown over at some point onto my lovely garlic, and emptied its contents all over the place . AAAAAAARRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHH!!! It took me the best part of an hour to sort it all out. I've put the compost that was in the dalek into the permanent bins that the previous tenants left, and have relegated the damn thing to behind the shed for the time being, as this is the third time the it's ended up on it's side. I'm going to have to try and think of a way of anchoring it to the ground, as I'm fed up with having to sort it out.

I'm toying with the idea of putting it down on the flat-ish piece of ground where I'm going to put most of my spuds, as it's fairly sheltered and it can't go too far because of fencing and corrugated sheets. It'll save me having to cart bucket loads of compost down there by hand as well, as steps mean a barrow's out of the question. So it might work out for the best.

But why oh why is nothing ever simple????!!

Sorry for the whinge, but it really was the pinnacle of a pretty crappy day - the one place I go to get away from things, and it's trying to bite me on the bum too

    Hi Sarah
Bad luck with your rampant dalek!

How about digging it in a little? We put some soil round the outside edge of ours and banked it up a little, leaving the door thingy untouched. It seems to have worked and we haven't had any problems.

Having said that, we haven't tried to get anything out of it yet, so may have to just life the whole thing off and use the whole lot - haven't decided yet. BW doesn't want to use it for potting, so it will probably just be dug in as a soil conditioner!

The digging in thought is a good one, and what I will probably end up doing when I re-site it. The bit of ground where I had it before wasn't really big enough for that, which is a nuisance.

Will get it sorted one way or t'other!

You could knock a couple of posts in next to it- one on either side and then enclose the lot with some wire or several pieces of bailing twine?

or peg it, drill three holes in lip of base to form a triangle. You can buy what are like long tent pegs to secure it into the ground.

I've tried all of those things and nothing has worked. Probably see from other posts that I have regularly had to "rescue"mine from the adjacent field, which means it has gone over a five foot wall.
I am now trying to give mine back to the Council (my office unfortuantely!) and they are not too impressed.
So you have my full sympathy Sarah!

              Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy

Why dont you just use string ??

Poke a couple or four holes around the edge of the base and statr with some nylon ( non rotting ) cord tied firmly in place. Thread the cord across the base in a little web and finish off with a peg on the loose end rather than a knot.

Couple of shovels of compost or new material should be enough to keep it in place and as you build up, the more planted it becomes.

When you are ready, remove peg, pull out cord one at a time and lift off.
Probably about as clear as mud that, but I'm sure you'll work it out.

Hello Muddy Sarah, I would go with Nicos's idea. I'll be moving compst bins to my all new kitchen garden, and it's the method I'll be going for.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

My dalek's on a windswept open allotment - I keep a couple of heavy bricks on the top. Its worked so far....

                    Ho bugger....

Just received my new darlek bin yesterday, it was a abandoned outside the house by the courier at 5.45pm, right in the middle of Neighbours, (the programme not the house next door.)

I think i misunderstood the size-age of it on the order form, it's HUGE..!

I finally wrestled it into the back garden and left it there for now, now I'm wondering where to put it as my original spot is too small. However the cat thinks it's great fun to play in.

Once it's full (or nearly) of compost material it surely shouldn't blow around. I would go for the bricks on the lid

                        Yep tried ..........
bricks (and I mean big bricks!) on the lid,
                        bricks down below,
                        pegs,
                        tied it to the wall,
and the bugger still manages to break free, even when it is half full of compost.
