    Composting Cardboard

    We have two cats and they predominantly eat Felix pouch food. I have been in contact with Purina who make the stuff re recycling the carboard boxes that the pouches come in.

    Apparently the cardboard is suitable for contact with human food stuffs and is good for composting as it is printed with a soya based ink.

    That's really good news. Maybe Purina could make the pouches compostable too? Or, wouldn't it be good if cats were vegetarian? Then their poos wouldn't be so objectionable in my cabbage patch. Oh dear, have I gone off on one...

      Your cats are very privelidged PW!!!! Very posh food, we buy large bags of dried for ours (althought they do supplement with tasty morsels of their own catching, especially in the spring when there's so much young blood!) but these also tend to be plastic so no recycling there either.

      Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

      Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

        Most food labling is now printed with Veg based dies. I compost all my card. At the beginning of the season I carpet my whole plot in card and cover it with mulch then plant through it. At the end of the crop i rotovate it in.

        Demim is alos great to compost as it is cotton...it rots down a treat except for the back pockets which must be Nylon as they remain in the earth.

          Thanks for the info, i might start shredding mine for when i start mowing the lawn and composting the clippings. Wonder if we can get the manufacturers to put a sign on the packaging that states its compostable. :-)

            Speaking of cats etc and composting, I read in this months GYO mag that you can put dog urine soaked newspaper in your compost. Is this true for cats? DDL

              Uck.

              More importantly how would you convince them to pee on the paper in the first place..? Actually there are several produced on sundays just for that purpose i'm sure.

                    Yep you can put Urine soaked cats in your compost but you have to bash them on the head first or they jump out again.
